LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — October 24, 2026 — For generations of movie lovers, Hayley Mills will always be remembered as the bright-eyed young actress who captured hearts in Disney classics such as Pollyanna and The Parent Trap.

But behind her unforgettable childhood performances lies a much more complicated personal story, filled with extraordinary success, financial disappointment, difficult decisions, health challenges, and remarkable resilience.

Now 80 years old, the British actress remains a beloved figure in entertainment, more than six decades after becoming one of the world’s most famous child stars.

In 2026, Mills has returned to the headlines for several reasons. She celebrated her milestone 80th birthday, reflected on the fortune she lost from her Disney career, reportedly underwent emergency surgery, and made a public appearance celebrating one of her most memorable films.

Her story is not simply about a former child star growing older. It is about a woman who has spent much of her life discovering who she is beyond the characters that made her famous.

In September 2026, Mills appeared at the British Film Institute’s Southbank venue in London for a special screening and discussion of her 1961 film Whistle Down the Wind.

The appearance attracted renewed attention from fans who remembered her early performances.

The film, adapted from a novel written by her mother, Mary Hayley Bell, remains one of the most significant productions of Mills’s early career.

A restored 35mm print helped introduce the story to another generation of moviegoers.

In an August interview with The Guardian, Mills reflected on the experience of making the film and the people who helped bring it to the screen.

Her participation in the anniversary celebrations demonstrated her continuing connection to cinema history and the audiences who have followed her work for decades.

Hayley Mills’ Health Scare: Reports of Emergency Surgery

One of the more concerning developments involving Mills in 2026 emerged in June.

According to a report by Square Mile News, the actress underwent emergency surgery for a hernia on June 2.

The information reportedly came from correspondence submitted to a London magistrates’ court by her longtime partner, actor Firdous Bamji, explaining why she could not attend a hearing.

The report stated that Mills was recovering in hospital following the procedure.

However, the account did not establish that she was experiencing a life-threatening condition, and detailed medical information was not publicly available.

Her subsequent participation in film-related events offers a more reassuring picture of her public activities, although appearances alone cannot establish someone’s medical condition.

There is no verified report that Hayley Mills has died or received a terminal diagnosis. The June surgery report should not be confused with an announcement of a new medical emergency in October.

One of the most surprising stories to emerge from Mills’s 80th birthday celebrations concerned the money she earned as a child star.

In April 2026, Mills appeared alongside her sister, Juliet Mills, on Rosebud, the podcast hosted by Gyles Brandreth.

During the conversation, she discussed the financial consequences of her extraordinary early success.

Although she had become one of Disney’s biggest young stars, Mills explained that much of her childhood earnings ultimately went toward taxes.

She recalled how a dispute with British tax authorities resulted in a devastating loss of money she had expected to receive when she became an adult.

The experience left her with a very different financial reality from what audiences might have imagined.

To millions of fans, she was the famous girl appearing in major Hollywood productions. Behind the scenes, however, her financial future was becoming increasingly uncertain.

Mills also criticized the advice she received from a family solicitor during that period.

The story attracted widespread attention in May 2026 because it challenged the assumption that childhood stardom necessarily guarantees lifelong wealth.

Her experience has become an example of the financial vulnerability that young performers can face, even when their movies achieve enormous success.

On April 18, 2026, Hayley Mills celebrated her 80th birthday.

The occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on her remarkable family history.

Her sister, Juliet Mills, joined her for the Rosebud podcast, released during her birthday weekend.

The sisters discussed growing up in a household surrounded by performers, writers, and major figures from British theater and cinema.

Their father, Sir John Mills, was one of Britain’s most distinguished actors, while their mother, Mary Hayley Bell, was a successful playwright and novelist.

Among the family’s famous acquaintances were Vivien Leigh and Noël Coward.

The sisters also shared memories of their earliest acting experiences.

Juliet began performing on stage as a child, while Hayley became internationally famous through her early film work.

The conversation offered a rare glimpse into the personal experiences behind a family that helped shape British entertainment for generations.

The Extraordinary Story of How Walt Disney Discovered Her

One of the most charming memories Mills shared in April concerned her first meeting with Walt Disney.

According to Mills, she was still a child when Disney expressed interest in casting her in Pollyanna.

Her family traveled to meet him in London.

During the journey, her mother suddenly remembered that they had left their little white Pekingese puppy at home.

She returned to retrieve the dog, despite the family already being late.

Mills later recalled that the puppy helped make the meeting feel more relaxed.

Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the importance of meeting Walt Disney, she could focus on the little dog.

The meeting helped launch one of the most successful child-acting careers of the era.

Mills has remembered Disney as warm, generous, and deeply committed to making films that encouraged audiences to see goodness in other people.

But their professional relationship also came with restrictions that shaped her career choices.

The Parent Trap: The Movie That Made Her a Household Name

In 1961, Mills starred in The Parent Trap.

She played two characters, Susan Evers and Sharon McKendrick, twin sisters who had been separated as babies and unexpectedly met at summer camp.

The girls eventually discover their relationship and devise a plan to reunite their divorced parents.

The movie became one of Disney’s most beloved family films.

Mills’s dual performance was particularly impressive because she had to give each sister a distinct personality while making their interactions feel natural.

At a time when filmmaking technology was far less advanced than it is today, the scenes featuring both twins required careful planning and technical precision.

The movie helped establish Mills as an international star.

Decades later, the story was remade in 1998 with Lindsay Lohan playing the twins.

Although younger audiences may be more familiar with the remake, Mills’s original performance remains an important part of Disney history.

The Oscar-Winning Performance in Pollyanna

Before The Parent Trap, Mills had already won international recognition through Pollyanna.

Released in 1960, the movie told the story of an orphaned girl whose optimism transforms the people around her.

Her performance earned her the Academy Juvenile Award, a special Oscar recognizing outstanding achievements by young performers.

She also won a Golden Globe Award for her work.

The role made her a symbol of innocence, hope, and youthful optimism.

However, that image eventually became difficult to escape.

As Mills entered adolescence and adulthood, audiences and film executives continued associating her with the cheerful characters she had portrayed as a child.

She later acknowledged that growing up under those expectations created emotional and professional challenges.

The Hollywood Role Walt Disney Would Not Let Her Accept

During her April 2026 interview, Mills also discussed a major film opportunity that never materialized.

She had been considered for the title role in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 adaptation of Lolita.

Mills found the role interesting and believed it could have offered an opportunity to demonstrate a different side of her acting abilities.

However, Walt Disney discouraged her from accepting it.

He believed the controversial material could damage the wholesome image she had established through Disney films.

The role ultimately went to Sue Lyon.

Looking back, Mills recognized that the decision might have dramatically changed the direction of her career.

The experience illustrates how little control child performers sometimes had over their professional identities.

Even when they became major stars, adults often made decisions about what roles were considered appropriate for them.

Her Personal Struggles Behind the Famous Smile

Despite her cheerful public image, Mills has spoken candidly about difficulties she experienced while growing up in the entertainment industry.

In her 2021 memoir, Forever Young: A Memoir, she discussed the pressure of maintaining the youthful appearance and personality audiences expected.

She revealed that she experienced bulimia during adolescence.

The eating disorder was connected in part to anxiety about growing older and losing the childlike identity that had made her famous.

In interviews, Mills has explained that the expectations placed on her sometimes made her feel powerless over her own life.

She also described the complicated process of separating her personal identity from the characters she portrayed.

Her willingness to discuss those experiences has helped provide a fuller understanding of childhood stardom, beyond the glamorous photographs and successful movies.

These struggles belong to her past and should not be misrepresented as evidence of a current health crisis.

Her Marriage, Children, and Longtime Partner

Mills’s personal life has included marriage, motherhood, and long-term relationships.

In 1971, she married British film director Roy Boulting, whom she had met while working on The Family Way.

Their relationship attracted attention because of their substantial age difference.

The marriage eventually ended in divorce.

They had one son, Crispian Mills, who later became a musician and the frontman of the British rock band Kula Shaker.

Mills also has a younger son, Jason Lawson, from her relationship with actor Leigh Lawson.

Her children have remained an important part of her life.

Crispian also helped encourage her to organize her memories and begin writing her autobiography.

For many years, Mills has been in a relationship with actor Firdous Bamji.

Although she has spent much of her life in the public eye, she has generally maintained a degree of privacy around her family relationships.

Her Return to Acting and Recent Films

"The

Unlike some former child stars who leave entertainment entirely, Mills continued acting into adulthood and later life.

Her credits include The Trouble with Angels, Appointment with Death, Good Morning, Miss Bliss, and the British television series Wild at Heart.

In 2024, she appeared in the psychological thriller Trap, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

The film starred Josh Hartnett and introduced Mills to another generation of moviegoers.

Her continued involvement in film and television demonstrates the longevity of her career.

She has also participated in public conversations about classic movies, discussing the experiences that shaped her professional life.

Rather than distancing herself from her Disney years, she has increasingly embraced the opportunity to explain what those experiences meant to her.

An Upcoming November 2026 Appearance

There is also a forthcoming public event that may interest longtime fans.

Riverside Studios in London has announced Hayley Mills in Conversation for November 8, 2026.

The event forms part of the venue’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Organizers describe it as a special fundraising conversation with the award-winning actress.

The appearance is significant because it offers fans an opportunity to hear directly from Mills about her life, films, and long connection to British theater.

The event remains scheduled according to the venue’s published listing, although event plans can change.

Why Hayley Mills Remains a Hollywood Treasure

Mills occupies a special place in entertainment history.

Her early performances helped define an era of family filmmaking.

She became a star at a time when children’s movies were an important part of Hollywood’s international success.

But her career also illustrates the challenges faced by young actors who grow up in public.

She experienced the rewards of worldwide fame alongside financial disappointment, personal pressure, and difficult career choices.

Her later work, memoir, and interviews have allowed audiences to see the woman behind the famous childhood roles.

Today, she remains admired not only for Pollyanna and The Parent Trap, but also for her honesty about the experiences that shaped her life.
