He Eventually Stepped Away From Acting

After years in television and entertainment, Ely largely retired from acting in 2001.

He remained away from the profession for many years before making a brief return in the 2014 television movie Expecting Amish.

By that point, his life had moved far beyond the era when he was regularly appearing on television screens.

Family had become an important part of his life.

Ron and Valerie Were Married for 35 Years

Ely married Valerie Lundeen in 1984.

The couple remained together for 35 years until her death in 2019.

They had three children together: Kirsten, Kaitland, and Cameron.

In 2018, the family celebrated another milestone when daughter Kaitland welcomed a son, making Ron and Valerie grandparents for the first time.

Valerie Had Her Own Public Life Before Marriage

Valerie Lundeen had worked as a flight attendant before becoming known through beauty pageants.

In 1980, she won Miss Airline International, a competition for flight attendants.

A year later, she was crowned Miss Florida, USA.

She later competed for the Miss USA title.

Her background connected her to a world that Ron also knew well.

Before marrying Valerie, Ely had served as host of the Miss America competition.

He hosted the pageant in both 1980 and 1981.

The couple later married in 1984 and went on to build a family together.

For decades, they appeared to have created a private life far removed from the adventure television series that had made Ron famous.

On October 15, 2019, authorities were called to the Ely family home in Santa Barbara, California.

What deputies discovered inside the residence began one of the darkest chapters of Ron Ely’s life.

Valerie, who was 62, was found dead.

Authorities said she had suffered multiple stab wounds.

The suspect was identified as the couple’s 30-year-old son, Cameron Ely.

After finding Valerie, deputies searched the home and surrounding property for Cameron.

Authorities eventually located him outside the residence.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were unable to gain verbal control of him and determined that he posed a threat.

Four deputies then fired their service weapons.

Cameron was fatally wounded at the scene.

Following the incident, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office described what had happened.

‘The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at the home of actor Ron Ely.

‘Upon arrival, deputies contacted Ron Ely and discovered his wife, Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, deceased with multiple stab wounds inside the home. While on scene, deputies identified the suspect as the Ely’s son, 30-year-old Cameron Ely.

‘Deputies searched the residence and surrounding area for Cameron Ely. During the search, the suspect was located outside the home. He posed a threat and in response four deputies fired their service weapons at the suspect, fatally wounding him. No deputies were injured during the confrontation with the suspect.’

The sheriff’s office said the events would be examined through criminal, coroner’s, and administrative investigations.

At the time of the initial statement, autopsies were still pending.

The identities of the deputies involved were also expected to be released later.

For Ron Ely, however, the official investigations could not change the reality that both his wife and son were gone.

Ron and Valerie had shared 35 years of marriage.

The couple had raised three children and entered grandparenthood together shortly before the tragedy.

Her death at the family home was therefore not simply a shocking criminal case.

It marked the sudden end of a relationship that had formed a central part of Ely’s adult life.

Cameron’s death happened during the same incident.

Within a short period, Ron Ely lost both his wife and his son.

The sequence of events drew national attention not only because Ely was a recognizable actor, but because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The family home became the center of a case that would later move into federal court.

In October 2020, approximately one year after the shooting, Ron Ely filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The lawsuit challenged the official account of the confrontation with Cameron.

According to court documents, the family alleged that Cameron was attempting to surrender when deputies opened fire.

The court filing alleged that Cameron had been surrendering before deputies fired more than 20 shots.

That claim directly challenged the sheriff’s description of Cameron as posing an immediate threat.

The disagreement placed the circumstances of the shooting under further scrutiny.

For Ely, pursuing the lawsuit represented another chapter in the aftermath of the family tragedy.

For generations of television viewers, Ron Ely represented adventure.

Publicity images showed him as Tarzan, standing in jungle settings and embodying the heroic character associated with strength and survival.

Decades later, his name became connected to a deeply personal tragedy that had nothing to do with Hollywood fiction.

The contrast was striking.

Although Ely appeared in other projects, the television role remained the performance most strongly connected with his name.

Playing Tarzan in the 1960s gave him a lasting place in television history.

Long after the series ended, photographs of Ely in character continued to symbolize his career.

For fans, his death brought renewed attention to that earlier period.

After retiring from acting, Ely was no longer a constant presence in entertainment news.

His brief appearance in Expecting Amish in 2014 was an exception rather than the beginning of a major comeback.

For the most part, he had moved away from acting and public celebrity.

That relative privacy made the events of 2019 even more shocking when they became widely reported.

Although the final chapter of Valerie’s life became connected with tragedy, she had built her own history long before it.

She had worked as a flight attendant.

She competed successfully in pageants.

She became a wife, mother, and eventually grandmother.

Her 35-year marriage to Ron represented the majority of her adult life.

In 2018, daughter Kaitland gave birth to a son.

The arrival made Ron and Valerie grandparents for the first time.

That family milestone came only a year before the events that would forever change the household.

The contrast between those two periods made the tragedy even more difficult to comprehend.

No matter how successful his acting career had been, the deaths of Valerie and Cameron inevitably became a defining part of Ely’s later life.

The tragedy occurred years after he had stepped away from regular acting.

It happened in the private world he had built beyond Hollywood.

And its consequences continued well after the initial police investigation.

Ron Ely’s decision to file suit showed that he did not accept every part of the official account surrounding Cameron’s death.

The allegation that Cameron had been surrendering raised a fundamental dispute about what happened in the moments before deputies fired.

The lawsuit ensured that the events would continue to be examined outside the immediate criminal investigation.

The sheriff’s office stated that Cameron posed a threat.

The lawsuit presented a different version.

That conflict became a central part of the legal aftermath.

The shooting involved four deputies, and authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the confrontation.

For the Ely family, however, another life had been lost.

His career began in an entertainment industry that looked very different from modern Hollywood.

He became a television star during an era when adventure series reached enormous audiences through a relatively small number of major networks.

His portrayal of Tarzan became part of that television landscape.

Decades later, his name was still immediately recognizable to viewers who grew up watching the series.

Ely lived long enough to see the television industry transform completely.

He went from being the face of one of television’s best-known adventure characters to spending much of his later life away from the screen.

He became a husband, father, and grandfather.

Then, in the final years of his life, he endured losses few families could imagine.

Despite the tragedy surrounding his later years, Ron Ely’s professional legacy remains tied to the role that first made him famous.

For viewers who watched Tarzan in the 1960s, he represented a particular era of television adventure.

The character became inseparable from his public identity.

Images of Ely as Tarzan remain among the most recognizable from his career.

Celebrity careers are often remembered through performances, awards, and photographs.

But lives continue long after the cameras stop.

In Ely’s case, the private years that followed his acting career included a tragedy that overshadowed everything else.

He lost the woman he had been married to for 35 years.

He lost his son during the same incident.

Her death came inside the family home where she and Ron had built their life together.

Authorities identified Cameron as the person responsible for the stabbing.

Within the same police response, Cameron was killed by deputies outside the residence.

The extraordinary sequence of events left the Ely family permanently changed.

Five years separated the family tragedy from Ely’s death at 86.

During that period, his name occasionally returned to headlines because of the lawsuit and continuing interest in the case.

But to many longtime fans, he remained the actor who once swung into living rooms as Tarzan.

Ron Ely’s life contained the kind of contrasts rarely visible during the height of celebrity.

He played a larger-than-life hero on television.

He hosted major pageants.

He married Valerie and raised three children.

He later stepped away from acting and largely lived outside the spotlight.

Then, in 2019, violence entered his home and took two members of his immediate family.

For television history, he will remain associated with Tarzan.

For those who followed his later life, the losses of Valerie and Cameron will also remain impossible to separate from his story.

His journey included fame, family, retirement, and profound grief.

Now, with his death at the age of 86, another figure from the golden era of television adventure is gone.

But the role that made him famous — and the extraordinary personal history that followed — ensure Ron Ely’s name will not soon be forgotten.

Tarzan Star Ron Ely Dies at 86, Five Years After Tragedy Struck His Family
